Construction starting on Ann Arbor’s Lowertown project

. Workers hope to finish the mega development, also called Broadway Village, by late 2009.

Strathmore Development Company is redeveloping 7.3 acres at the southeast corner of Plymouth Road and Maiden Lane long dominated by a brownfield site composed of a vacant shopping center and a handful of other old commercial buildings. Those buildings will be replaced with a large mixed-use development meant to compliment the nearby University of Michigan Hospital and Lower Town district.

Ann Arbor’s Llamasoft opens Singapore office

LLamasoft provides software and expertise to design and modify supply chain network operations, according to the company’s Web site. It’s product, Supply Chain Guru, is the leading supply chain strategic planning application available in the market today, the Web site says.

All Singapore hires are local employees, Bobalik says.

Student venture fund makes first investment

A University of Michigan student-managed venture capital seed fund made its first investment in Ann Arbor-based technology company Arbor Photonics, U-M’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business announced today.

The company is commercializing a high-powered fiber optic laser used in industrial applications, such as manufacturing electronic parts - a technology that originated in U-M’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department. It will receive $85,000 in an early-stage investment from the Frankel Commercialization Fund to be used for customer identification, prototype development, and the creation of engineering and manufacturing plans.

Officials looking to establish Spark incubator in Ypsilanti

Members of the Eastern Washtenaw Leaders Group gave an update on their fledging organization and the business incubator planned by economic development group Ann Arbor Spark for downtown Ypsilanti during a breakfast meeting of the Ypsilanti Area Chamber of Commerce Tuesday.

The Eastern Leaders group, made up of various community, business and educational leaders, was formed about six months ago. Eastern Leaders is organized into three committees, one each to focus on education, collaboration/redevelopment and business incubator opportunities, said Eastern Michigan University Provost Don Loppnow.
