New lot offers the cheapest parking in Ann Arbor-The Ann Arbor News

Downtown Development Authority Deputy Director Joe Morehouse said he thinks the low charge will lure downtown drivers who won’t mind walking a few extra blocks.

In about two months, the city is expected to turn the old city maintenance garage at 415 W. Washington into temporary parking until officials determine the future use for the site. While it serves as a parking lot, rates will be $2 a day or $40 for monthly permits.

EMU business school to recruit students from China-The Ann Arbor News

The Eastern Michigan University College of Business is looking to recruit students from China. The college has partnered with the Chinese Association of Greater Detroit to increase enrollment at EMU, as well as boost economic development and business partnerships between China and the U.S.

“The students who earn business degrees at EMU will be future managers in China. They will be familiar with our area, and when considering business opportunities in the U.S., will naturally look to our region,” said David Mielke, dean of the College of Business, in a prepared statement.

Compuware Relocates Additional Product Development Activities to Detroit

Compuware Corporation today announced the further centralization of a number of its product development activities. In particular, the company will:

– Transition development of its Strobe product family from Cambridge, Massachusetts to its Detroit headquarters, which will unify development for all of Compuware’s mainframe solutions. — Transition development of its Vantage Service Manager product from Sydney, Australia to its Detroit headquarters, where the company develops a number of its other Vantage products. — Transition development of its Optimal Trace product from Dublin, Ireland to its Detroit headquarters, which will unify development for the full spectrum of Compuware’s Application Delivery Management solutions.

When these types of things happen, when jobs are shifted around, it’s nice when the destination is Detroit. This won’t mean more employees for Compuware but it may mean more workers in downtown Detroit.

Transit council launches mass transit study

A study to determine the best ways to bring mass transit to metro Detroit is about to begin.

The Regional Transit Coordinating Council approved the study Tuesday as part of an ongoing effort to bring governments together for a transit system that most metropolitan areas already have.

In addition I think the Detroit region needs to study mass transit itself so they can understand it and stop with the tired old excuses, like thinking that only New York City is dense enough for trains when places like Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix, all incredibly sprawled out metropolitan areas, have all built trade systems.

Heavenly Chicken and Waffles Offers Fresh Food at a Fair Price …

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) August 29, 2007 — Heavenly Chicken & Waffles, located at 18035 Conant, Detroit, MI 48234, 313.891.8478, is bringing healthy dining to metro Detroit. Meal portions and prices are designed to fit every budget.

Heavenly Chicken and Waffles is owned by Aaron Sanders, Jr. and managed by Kimberly Bell. Their desire is to bring food with nutritional value to an area surrounded by fast food restaurants.

Their food is cooked without transfats! It’s unusual for a chicken and waffles restaurant in Detroit to issue a press release so it’s worth noting. It sounds good if you don’t want to spring for the more upscale Detroit Breakfast House and Grill downtown.

Auto show floats $8M Cobo add-on

Detroit auto show organizers are exploring a 30,000-square-foot expansion of Cobo Center they say would meet the show’s growing needs, while local leaders haggle over a long-term solution.

The idea is a temporary but immediate solution that comes as a proposal for a $1 billion expansion and renovation of Cobo is stalled amid bickering over the cost and who should foot the bill.

Detroit remains by far the most critical North American auto show in terms of product launches and media attention. But while the show boasts the most automotive journalists and critical product launches, it also draws gripes from car makers and media about the tight quarters.

At the same time, the nation’s other big shows — in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles — are actively trying to unseat Detroit as the main event.

The L.A. show, which had overlapped the Detroit show, moved to November last year so it could better compete for major product introductions. And Chicago show organizers have publicly made the case that theirs should be the top U.S. show.

Oakland County’s L. Brooks Patterson wants to receive the hotel and entertainment revenues on a show without having to pay their fair share. This is another one of those times we need to come together as a region or have somebody higher up force us to.

A decade of delights

Comprehensive though it may be, Chrysler Arts, Beats, Eats, Drinks, Massages, Free Trips, Family Fun and International Programming doesn’t have all that sweet a ring to it. So Chrysler Arts, Beats & Eats will have to do.

But as the festival enters its 10th year, it is clearly offering more than the three simple words (four, counting its title sponsor) its title encapsulates.

In addition, dozens of local bands and musicians will perform on the festival’s eight music stages, including Thunderbirds are Now!, Jesse Palter, the Prime Ministers, the Sights, the Muggs, the Silent Years, Johnny Headband and Thornetta Davis.

A Pie Worth the Drive

Thankfully I only live about five hours from my homeland of Detroit, and this weekend that’s where I headed.

Detroit is not only Eminem and Eight Mile, or Kid Rock and the White Stripes, it’s also a fair food city, and Buddy’s Pizza, my favorite parlor, is located near an ethnic enclave filled with Polish and Middle Eastern culinary delights known as Hamtramck. Located in the city proper at Six Mile and Conant (17125 Conant, (313)892-9001), Buddy’s (aka Buddy’s Rendezvous) is a 71-year-old former blind pig where after World War II, owner Gus Guerra legitimized the business as a legal tavern and added a Sicilian style pie to the menu that still rules the state of Michigan.

“It is truly one of the best examples of Midwestern pizza, and with Chicagoans so close, it really is worth a drive.” One voice in Chicago saying that Detroit is worth driving to just for the pizza, the Sicilian style pizza at Buddy’s pizza.
