Sicko

07.06.07 | technician | In windsor, film, sicko, michigan state, health

I finally saw Michael Moore’s new movie Sicko and I think it’s a movie that everyone in America should go out and see.  And if you’re among the Americans who are struggling severely with health-care costs that I’m sure the director won’t mind if you have to resort to downloading the movie from the Internet.  While the movie isn’t about Detroit, per se, it does feature some Detroit scenes, like a drive over the massacre bridge with shots looking back to the Detroit skyline, and of course Moore wears a Tigers hat and a Michigan State hat throughout the movie.  They go to Windsor (driving south across the border to Canada) where the state of health care is surprisingly different.  In fact, quite civilized in comparison, much like the rest of the developed world is compared to the United States.  The horror stories of “socialized medicine” in Canada are revealed as greatly exaggerated if not downright lies.

I know many people in Flint and perhaps some in Detroit are not fans of Michael Moore due to the way Flint, Michigan was portrayed in his first big movie “Roger and Me” which also put General Motors in a pretty bad light for the way they abandoned that town.  The company is now one of Detroit’s best corporate citizens and it would be devastating if they were to abandon the Renaissance Center (without someone like, say, Ford taking the building back as their headquarters).  But I think many will agree that at some level he has the best interest of the common people of Flint, his hometown, in mind as he tells their stories like he did in Bowling for Columbine.  Of course, after you see Roger and Me you should realize that there are more than just crazy people left in Flint.
