It’s no joke: Comics love to bring act to Detroit

Big-name comics with Detroit tours say the city’s lively comedy scene and Detroiters’ edgy sense of humor make it one of the best places to cut one’s teeth on the way up: If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.

From Gilda Radner of “Saturday Night Live” fame to David Alan Grier, star of film, TV and the stand-up circuit, Metro Detroit has been a crucible for some of the biggest names in comedy. So how does a comedian know if he’s got what it takes to make it big? He can make ‘em laugh in the D.

Showcase creativity in Detroit to grow region

The online magazines Model D and MetroMode feel fortunate to be part of a growing next generation of creative companies that are flourishing in Detroit. Together with Rick Rogers, president of the College for Creative Studies, I am leading an initiative to measurably grow southeast Michigan’s creative sector economy further.

The creative sector initiative is one of 11 “Road to Renaissance” projects designed to achieve rapid and sustained economic growth in Metro Detroit. Remember, Detroit has given the world wonderful gifts in music, design, advertising, architecture and digital production. We can rightfully claim our place as one of the world’s great creative centers.

There are numerous creative companies and organizations in the Detroit area but they are spread out with in the city and throughout the suburbs and exurbs. Most people are only aware of what’s in their surrounding neighborhoods. While we want these institutions to be in every neighborhood we also need to have an area of concentrated, dense creative activity. Due to the existing institutions (Wayne State, CCS, MOCAD, DIA, TechTown, Pure Detroit in New Center and throughout downtown, etc.) they’ve decided to promote a Woodward Corridor Creative District. With a name like that the corridor can grow to encompass Ferndale,, Royal Oak, Berkley, Birmingham, the Cranbrook Academy, all the way out to Pontiac an inward to Highland Park.

Detroit needs a drink

Temperatures are hovering near 90 and rainfall has been lower than average. So get out there and enjoy the lakes or the Detroit River and be thankful you don’t live someplace that is hotter than 100 degrees from May til September.

Eco-Friendly Traffic Enforcement In Detroit

Wayne State University police Sgt. Frank Smith used the vehicle to issue a citation to a student who failed to obey a stop sign earlier this month. Wayne State officials said this marked the “first eco-friendly traffic stop issued by a police officer driving a zero-emission, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.”

A Mercedes F-Cell hydrogen fuel cell car made the world’s first hydrogen-powered traffic stop in Detroit. The car gets fuel from NextEnergy up the street in TechTown.

Spin on Stravinsky tells Detroit ‘Soldier’s Tale’

The late novelist Kurt Vonnegut wrote a new scenario to fit Stravinsky’s score. Vonnegut, who fought in World War II, made his protagonist an actual soldier: Detroiter Eddie Slovik, who in 1945 became the first American to be executed for desertion since the Civil War. It is Vonnegut’s version of “The Soldier’s Tale” that the Detroit Symphony Orchestra presents Wednesday night as part of its “8 Days in June” festival.
