From the new Detroit techno site, an article from the UK about the history of the influence of Detroit techno. Detroit has seen much music birthed there and so many people take it for granted. Sometimes it takes an outsider, perhaps a techno music lover in Europe, to appreciate the things that make the city what it is.
As the birthplace of techno in the mid-Eighties, Detroit has a near-mythical status in dance music’s history. Yet, ironically, its reputation as a nexus of sonic innovation is based largely on music committed to vinyl almost 20 years ago by a trio of artists whose status is now that of “living legends”.
I do think that Detroit hip hop is strong in Europe too…since I started exploring it, I haven’t stopped sticking to it lol
