Kick Out the Jams

11.26.07 | technician | In hip hop, techno, rock scene, motown, punk

The Detroit Metro Times has published their list of 100 favorite Detroit songs which is actually not that easy considering how many popular songs have come from or been associated with the city. A considerable number in the top 100 are Motown. Some would disagree with that but it remains true that techno, despite the influence that it’s had, is an underground form of music. “No Fun” by The Stooges was the first or some of the first punk rock at number four and “Boogie Chillen” from John Lee Hooker at number five may be the first rock ever. Detroit techno comes in at number 18 with Juan Atkins’s “No UFO’s” which stands in for much of Detroit techno in general on the list although “Big Fun”, “Strings of Life”, and “The Punisher” make the top 100 as well as DJ Assault’s “Ass and Titties”, “The Climax” and “Bug in the Bassbin” from Carl Craig which may be the first drum and bass song ever, booty anthem “Sandwiches”, “Spastik” from Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman and “Substance Abuse” make honorable mentions. Funkadelic comes in at number 40. Madonna does make the list as do Eminem and of course the White Stripes.
