Vacant homes in Detroit

09.18.07 | technician | In buffalo

This graphic was taken from the New York Times. It’s a list of the top cities with vacant homes something people are always associating Detroit with. What this shows is that Detroit is not among the top 10 American cities for vacant homes per capita. Number one on that list would be St. Louis which has a number of empty houses among a diverse array of incredible housing stock. Of right behind St. Louis would be Buffalo which is not quite as well blessed. That city is trying to get off this list by demolishing hundreds of homes every year. Next on the list is Baltimore which despite a number of vacant homes is still a moderately dense city. Number four is Gary, Indiana which unfortunately was built quite sparsely. Rounding out the list are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Dayton, Ohio, Savanna, Georgia, and Kansas City, Kansas. Some of these cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have a lot in common with Detroit while the rest show that America’s urban problems affect all of its cities.
