Changes in store for Macomb County?

MOUNT CLEMENS — A proposal by a Novi developer to demolish the city’s municipal building and build condominiums on the site could come a step closer to reality when an architectural study is completed next week.

Developer Bernie Glieberman, president of Crosswinds Communities, told city commissioners in April he is interested in developing the municipal headquarters into upscale condominiums. Plans call for demolishing the Mount Clemens City Hall and the fire department and building about 120 condo units.

William Cooper, Mount Clemens city manager, said the changes could lead to even more businesses and houses downtown.

In Warren, a new city hall opened in November last year. The city hall is part of a $60 million downtown project that includes a library, a four-level, 618-vehicle parking structure and a nearly 2-acre park. That project is also being funded through municipal bonds.

There had already been a story last year about people moving into downtown condos in Mt. Clemens but, despite being Macomb County’s symbolic downtown, it’s still quite small. But there are some cheap options for living nearby and there are certain amenities, like the water, that could make it nice. Meanwhile, downtown Warren sprang into existence for the first time in its history.
