Best Places to Live

05.16.07 | technician | In ann arbor

In Sperling’s latest “Best Places to Live” list oh 400 cities Ann Arbor is rated number five up from number six last time. The criteria, arguably somewhat arbitrary, are based on quality of life including the state of the job market, which explains why Detroit, not including half of its suburbs, dropped precipitously since last year with the amount of auto-related jobs that have been lost. But other major cities in the Midwest also dropped huge amounts including Chicago and Minneapolis for reasons unknown to me. At the top of the list are many small cities that I know next to nothing about and out of the top 20 Portland (Oregon), in many ways a bigger version of Ann Arbor, is the only place I would consider moving to and even then it’s not a very large city. So anyways the list seems to heavily penalize larger cities due to their problems without penalizing small metropolitan areas for their lack of cultural amenities that are only found in larger cities. Many people say they like Ann Arbor because despite its small size it’s quite cosmopolitan and has a lot going on due to the many universities and their students and alumni but it doesn’t have the problems of nearby Detroit or Chicago. This is only one was an unless you’re exactly the lists intended target audience I hope you don’t decide where to live based solely on this one list as I’m not sure how well Ogden, Utah or Boise City, Idaho do on any other list.
