Kozmo in Kerrytown

04.23.07 | technician | In food, korean, ann arbor, windsor, restaurant

The review of BG Korean Restaurant in the last issue of Metro Times got my mouth watering and my mind thinking and my fingers holding invisible steel Korean chopsticks. I salivate at the thought of bangan, the various small side dishes they always bring out at korean restaurants except for casual diners, and kimchi spread out in front of me. But I also think about the fact that there are two types of Korean restaurants in the area, regular family restaurants and casual diner style joints which you find a lot of in Ann Arbor but not anywhere else in the Midwest that I know of. What I’m talking about is small restaurants, often with long counters with stools for sitting intimately next to strangers in front of the grill where your food will be cooked, where the food isn’t everything you’d find at a regular Korean restaurant. My favorite one in Ann Arbor is Kozmo’s in Kerrytown where you’ll find Korean-American fusion dishes like Seoul Dog (hotdog wrapped with bacon deep-fried with kimchi on top) and bulgogi hoagies and something called “twiggum”, tempura french fries and other vegetables. This place is popular with Community High School students and makes up for its losses of authenticity with its added fun. I highly recommend it if you’re heading out West and, although Windsor is also very cheap, Kozmo is quite a deal for Korean cuisine.
