Launched in 2002, the $17 million project is redeveloping Seven Mile between Woodward Avenue and John R.
This is the area known as Chaldean Town, an area whose Chaldean residents and businesses have seen better days. Metro Detroit has a large Middle Eastern population and among them is a large Chaldean population, who are the Christians in and from Iraq. Grants have been made to help revitalize this area before but things aren’t turning around quick enough. But with this influx of cash over the next five years and the megachurch developments in the area, not to mention a possible new Gateway development a mile north on Woodward at 8 Mile, who knows? In the meantime, the remaining Iraqi bakeries and other businesses need all the support they can get. [via]
